Team Issued

This post is on reverse negatives in team issued sets. Minor league team issued sets are not included since all minor league cards I have found have been discussed in past posts.

1960 Atlanta Braves Spic and Span #7A Del Crandall. The reverse is the bottom center photo with him batting lefty, and the corrected version is the bottom right photo with him batting righty.

1961 Jay Publishing Detroit Tigers #6 Chuck Cottier

1963 Jay Publishing Milwaukee Braves Sets A and B #NNO Lew Burdette

1967 Philadelphia Phillies Team Picture Pack #3 Jim Bunning

1972 St. Louis Cardinals Team Issue #5A Ted Simmons (reverse pic on right). There is also apparently a rev neg of Ted Simmons in the 1971 LPIU Team Postcard set, but I have not found a scan of it as of yet.

1979 Cleveland Indians Postcards #3 Dell Alston

1979 San Diego Padres Family Fun Centers Dean's Photo #34 Dave Campbell (unlisted).

1983 Boston Globe Boston Red Sox Series 2 #108 Chuck Schilling (unlisted).

1986 Mother's Seattle Mariners #10 Barry Bonnell (UER, unlisted). One way to tell with this one is that the Mariners logo on his shirt is on the wrong side.

1994 GTS '69 New York Mets Phone Cards #NNO Ed Kranepool (unlisted). You can tell because the N in the NY logo is reversed. For some reason though, there aren't nearly as many reversed Mets hats as there are Yankees hats.

As far as baseball goes, there is also a reverse negative of the Mike Portugal card from the 1994 San Fransisco Giants AMC Theaters set, but I have only seen it listed in price guides. Never ran across a scan of it.

1982 Pittsburgh Steelers Police #44 Frank Pollard (unlisted). The 44 is obviously reversed.

1983 Frito Lay New England Patriots #? Mike Kerrigan (unlisted). Kerrigan should be right handed and the 15 on his jersey is reversed.

1983 Frito Lay New England Patriots #? Ricky Smith (unlisted)

1983 Frito Lay New England Patriots #? Tony Eason (unlisted). Eason should be right handed and the 11 on his jersey is reversed.

There is also a reverse error of the 1981 Patriots Frito Lay #35 Bill Lenkaitis card, which I have seen at one point but did not save a scan of it. For some reason, they really had production problems with these Frito Lay Patriots cards.

1986 Miami Dolphins Law Enforcement #12 Mark Clayton (UER, unlisted). All the jersey numbers in this card are noticeably reversed.

1970-71 Phoenix Suns A1 Premium Beer #8A Dick Van Arsdale. There is also a corrected version of this card. One of the few basketball rev negs out there, this is also a seriously rare card that will cost you a pretty penny if you happen to see it pop up on eBay.

Stay tuned for my next post listing product issued cards (e.g. cards found in cereal boxes and such)...

Foreign Baseball and Basketball

There's really no telling how many reverses and other types of errors there are in non-American or Canadian produced trading card sets because there's no real guide that keeps track of all of them and there will definitely not be online scans posted of every card every created. But that's part of the fun of looking--you never know what you are going to find.

This post only concerns baseball and basketball cards. The only other sports I have discovered with reverse negatives in foreign-produced sets are in soccer, cricket, and rugby, and those will be covered in a later post.

1967 Topps Venezuela #150 Cy Young

1988-89 BYN (Puerto Rico) Winter League #75 Javier Ocasio

1993 Lime Rock (Dominican) Winter League #17 Carlos Mota (back picture). The Indians logo is reversed on the back picture (on the right), which you can tell by comparing it with the front.

1993-94 Line Up (Venezuela) #84 Mike Soper

1993-94 Line Up (Venezuela) #148 Kevin Noriega (back picture)

1994-95 Line Up (Venezuela) #266 Jaime Dismuke

1994-95 Line Up (Venezuela) #E34 Jim Bowie

There is also a reverse of the 1993-94 Line Up Venezuela #139 Mario Labastidas card, which I have seen but do not currently have a scan.

1988-89 Fournier NBA Estrellas #3 Kevin McHale (made in Spain)

1989 CAO Muflon (Yugoslavia) #1 Magic Johnson. Notice that the 2 on the front of his shirt is backwards and a backwards S is at the beginning where the "Lakers" should be.

1989 KOS-JEZ #204 Ralph Sampson (made in Yugoslavia)

1993-94 Disney Limit Magazine #NNO Kevin Johnson (made in Germany)

There has to be a ton more out there and I'm always looking (though probably not with Japanese cards--I've checked thousands of those and haven't found a single reversed photo yet). In the meantime, next post will deal with team-issued sports cards...

College Cards and Other Minor League Sets (TCMA, CMC, etc.)

1978 TCMA Holyoke Millers #11 Steve Green (UER, unlisted)

1980 TCMA Memphis Chicks #18 Dennis Sherow (UER, unlisted). The only way you can tell with this one is the top of the logo on his shirt should have the stripes facing to the right.

1982 TCMA Minor League #994 Dennis Sherow (UER, unlisted). Weird that Sherow has two TCMA rev negs when virtually no one else even has one. When it came to reverses, TCMA didn't print many as far as I know.

1987 TCMA Tidewater Mets Dwight Gooden (UER, unlisted). The TCMA card (on the left) is the reverse image of the ProCards version from that year.

1988 Baseball America AA All-Stars #29 Jeff Manto (UER, unlisted)

1988 CMC Phoenix Firebirds #4 Roger Mason (UER, unlisted)

1988 P&L Cap Cod League #35 Russell Springer (UER, unlisted). I love the way reverse 5's look...

1988 P&L Cape Cod League #102 Pat Leinan (UER, unlisted). Best way to tell with this one is the words on the scoreboard are reversed and on all the other Wareham Gatemen cards from this set, the scoreboard is on the right and the bleachers are on the left.

1989 CMC Phoenix Firebirds #10 Trevor Wilson (UER, unlisted). The Wilson card is on the left. The way you can tell is the white part of the logo on his hat is faced in the opposite direction from the hats of all the other players from this set (compare to the Tate card on the right hand photo).

1989 Grand Slam Quad City Angels #24 Larry Pardo (UER, unlisted, scan on left). Compare to another 1989 card on his in the right-hand scan. Same pic but reversed.

1989 Grand Slam Texas League All-Stars #28 Chuck Carr (UER, unlisted). The J is backwards on his hat.

1992 Front Row Draft Picks #45 Scott Klingenbeck (UER, unlisted). This player is right handed and the 2 on the back of his shirt is reversed.

1992-93 Fleer Excel #8 Doug Glanville (back photo, UER, unlisted). The Cubs logo is on the wrong side of his shirt.

1984-85 Coca-Cola Nebraska Cornhuskers Police #30 Lori Sippel (UER, unlisted)

1985-86 University of Nebraska Police #23 Dave Hoppen (UER, unlisted). Logo is on wrong side of shirt.

1991 Classic Four Sport #58 Shawn Estes (UER). This one is actually listed as a reverse negative in the books.

1993 Classic Four Sport #301 John Wasdin (back photo, UER, unlisted)

1989 Collegiate Collection Georgia #154 Wally Williamson (UER, unlisted)

1991-92 Penn State Legends #36A Mike Reid. The reverse negative version is not picture here, but rather the corrected version (on the right). I could not find a scan of the error version at the moment of looking, but when I do find one I will try to update this.

1989 -90 Collegiate Collection Louisville #88 Alex Mantel (UER, unlisted)

1989-90 Oregon State University Team Issue #12 Teo Alibegovic (UER, unlisted). Card is located on the top left corner of this scan.

There are a few other rev negs I know of that I couldn't find scans of, such as ther 1978 Geneva Cubs Team Issue card of Mike Godley, which is noted in price guides, as well as the 1954 Seattle Rainiers Popcorn card of Tommy Byrne. One day I will find those suckers, as well as many more hopefully. There's no telling how many team issued cards are reversed, but since those sets can be rare chances of scans popping up on the internet aren't good for a lot of them. No hope of finding a reversed minor league or college card after 1995 though--I've gone cross-eyed looking and just don't think there are any out there.

There's still a few more baseball cards to go before we go on to other sports. Next time we'll look at rev negs from foreign baseball sets.
